2001 #10

Dear CLVC Members,

Thanks to all for a terrific turnout last Wednesday for the Clean Power and LCHIP hearings! The testimony (for Clean Power) was very much consistent with our views on clean power. To assure cleaner air in NH, we'll want to support efforts to limit some of the trading provisions. In addition, we need to express our opposition to any measure that would allow for emissions trading in mercury.

Please continue your support of the Clean Power and LCHIP Bills.

For those who live in New Boston, please call Rep. Bruno and for those who reside in Alton, please call Rep. Czech regarding LCHIP.

It is imperative that we continue to strongly support these two very important bills. Please share your enthusiasm with us and let us know when you contact a representative.

This week..

Today, Tuesday Feb. 20th was an important day for hearings. I apologize for the delay in getting this letter to you. Hopefully, the following information can still encourage you to make a phone call or write a letter.

At 12:30 in Rep's Hall, three bills relative to sludge were heard. HB 207 advocates increasing state aid to municipalities for more money to handle sludge. Then, the Environment and Agriculture Committee heard HB 311 to increase fees to support a position at the DES for long-term solutions to sludge problems. Finally, HB 439 - funding a study to assess the viability of constructing or expanding disposal facilities to Rockingham and Strafford Counties - was heard.

HB 613, relative to fuels was discussed this morning. This bill seeks to establish consistency among our neighboring states. This is related to MTBE - a water-soluble pollutant that oxygenates gasoline.

HB 561 (also discussed today) seeks to abolish road tolls and increase the gas tax. Since road tolls waste fuel by requiring cars to stop, sit in traffic, and start up again. Gas taxes could inevitable have an impact on fuel economy and force people to think more wisely about fuel-efficient vehicles.

Thanks again for your continued support!
