Why do I support NH Audubon?
As a child, I was lucky to
spend a lot of time with my grandmother. She was a tireless advocate for nature and the environment as well as a strong, early supporter of the Audubon Society. We spent hours together as she shared her love and appreciation of nature.
I remember well and truly treasure those special times of wonder and learning. At my grandmother’s side I learned the names of birds, their songs and habitat. We explored the woods finding old nests, mosses and lichens to create centerpieces for the dining table or balsam to make fragrant pillows. Together we admired the extraordinary magic of nature and wildlife.
I carry those lessons with me today and continue to admire and respect the value of the natural environment. Recently, the local, non-profit child care center I founded 30 years ago was planning a new playground for the children. We suggested that nature be a major component of the project.
The natural playground concept became the overriding theme. Nature would supplant traditional playground equipment to create an outdoor learning environment. It is quite beautiful and very successful. Of course swings and slides are still part of the playground yet the lush, park-like grounds and opportunities for interactive play create a true outdoor classroom. We are very proud of the outcome.
We support Audubon because it educates and inspires others just as my grandmother did for me many years ago. I learned how important the natural environment is to everyday life and know that Audubon continues that tradition of environmental education and learning.
Audubon does important work providing environmental education, conservation research and wildlife monitoring, habitat protection, and environmental public policy and advocacy. We hope others will join us in supporting Audubon’s mission to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people.
