Common Nighthawks return in mid-May and NH Audubon’s Project Nighthawk will be out watching for them. Nighthawks are listed as endangered in the state and last year we found just five confirmed nests, but had possible nesting activity at ten other sites.

Volunteers are a vital part of this effort, locating and monitoring nests. Nighthawk surveys take place from 8-9:30pm and the time commitment is variable.

A volunteer training will be held on June 1, from 6:30-9pm. This training is designed for volunteers new to Project Nighthawk, but it is valuable for volunteers who have watched only a few times, and as a refresher for experienced volunteers. We will have an indoor introduction to nighthawks and nighthawk watching and then drive to a location where we can observe a displaying nighthawk (hopefully) and practice recording its behavior.
