Week of 5/8/08

This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, May 8th, 2008.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was reported from Marlborough on May 5th.

A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen on Hampton Beach on April 30th, and was last reported on May 4th.

A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and an ICELAND GULL were reported from Hampton Harbor on May 4th.

An ICELAND GULL was reported from Jenness Beach in Rye on May 3rd.

450 LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen on the ocean from Hampton on May 4th.

85 DUNLIN, 17 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, and 7 WILLETS were seen in Hampton Harbor on May 4th.

25 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, a LEAST SANDPIPER, 5 WILSON'S SNIPE, and 18 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen at the Krif Road fields in Keene on May 4th.

2 GADWALLS were seen in Hampton Marsh on May 6th.

A RUDDY DUCK and a LESSER SCAUP were seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on May 1st, and a RUDDY DUCK was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on May 3rd.

2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, and 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on May 4th.

A CERULEAN WARBLER was seen on the Middle Mountain trail at Pawtuckaway State Park in Nottingham on May 7th. A CAPE MAY WARBLER was seen in Exeter on May 6th.

An ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen in Newmarket on May 6th, one was seen in Hinsdale on May 7th, and one was seen at Pickering Ponds in Rochester on May 7th.

40 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Barnstead on May 4th.

15 BOBLINKS were seen in a field in Lyme on May 7th.

3 PURPLE MARTINS were seen along Route 302 in Conway, near the Maine state line on May 2nd.

A flock of 10 COMMON REDPOLLS was seen in Hanover on May 8th.

A flock of 12 PINE SISKINS was seen in Newmarket on May 4th.

More than 1,500 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES were observed migrating north by an observer in Seabrook on May 7th.

A few FISH CROWS were reported from Durham, Merrimack, and Concord during the past week.

Spring arrivals reported during the past week included: GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER, LEAST FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, WOOD THRUSH, VEERY, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA, PRAIRIE WARBLER, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, INDIGO BUNTING, SCARLET TANAGER, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and BROWN THRASHER.

Week of 5/1/08

This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, May 1st, 2008.

The SANDHILL CRANE that has been spending summers in Monroe for more than 5-years running has returned. Traditionally, it has been seen in fields near Plains Road, and along the Connecticut River.

A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Frost Point in Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on April 24th.

A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen on Hampton Beach on April 30th.

2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were reported from Warren Farm in Nottingham on April 14th.

2 PIPING PLOVERS were reported from Hampton Beach State Park on April 30th.

5 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were seen in the grass surrounding the runways at the Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth on April 27th.

6 Lesser YELLOWLEGS and 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS were seen at the Ledyard Bridge in Hanover on April 27th.

12 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, and a SPOTTED SANDPIPER were all seen at the Krif Road fields in Keene on April 29th.

155 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were counted along the coast on April 27th.

A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on April 27th.

A GADWALL was seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on April 25th.

A RUDDY DUCK was seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on April 29th, and one was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on April 30th.

A BOHEMIAN WAXWING was reported from Penacook on April 27th.

A COMMON REDPOLL was reported from the Keene Cemetery on April 25th.

5 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Barnstead on April 26th.

42 TURKEY VULTURES were seen roosting in Keene along the eastern edge of Green Wagon Farm, next to the Ashuelot River, on April 28th.

A WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was seen at the intersection of Route 108 and River Road in Stratham on April 26th.

Spring arrivals reported during the past week included: WILLET, VIRGINIA RAIL, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, CHIMNEY SWIFT, WARBLING VIREO, BANK SWALLOW, CLIFF SWALLOW, HOUSE WREN, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, GRAY CATBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, OVENBIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, EASTERN TOWHEE, VESPER SPARROW, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.

Week of 4/17/08

This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, April 17th, 2008.

An EARED GREBE in breeding plumage was seen at Bicentennial Park, located off of Route 1A in Hampton, on April 16th. Also present were at least 7 HORNED GREBES.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen in dunes on the west side of Route 1A in Seabrook on April 13th.

A LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen in Rye along Route 1A in tidal pools south of Rye Harbor State Park.

5 GLOSSY IBIS were seen at NH Audubon's Brookside Sanctuary in South Hampton on April 12th.

A PECTORAL SANDPIPER and 27 WILSON'S SNIPE were seen at Runnymede Farm in Hampton on April 13th.

2 PIPING PLOVERS were reported from Seabrook beach on April 15th.

63 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were reported from Rye Harbor State Park on April 12th.

19 SNOW GEESE were seen at the Portsmouth Country Club on April 16th, and 7 SNOW GEESE were seen in Amherst on April 12th.

5 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, 2 LESSER SCAUP, and 22 RING-NECKED DUCKS were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on April 13th.

2 GADWALL, 60 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR, an AMERICAN PIPIT, 60 HORNED LARKS, and 40 WILSON'S SNIPE were seen at Morrill's Farm in Penacook on April 13th.

17 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 2 GADWALL, 166 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 3 AMERICAN WIGEON, and 20 WILSON'S SNIPE were seen at Great Meadows in Charlestown on April 13th.

3 GADWALL, 6 LESSER SCAUP, and 2 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS were seen along the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on April 13th.

A GADWALL was seen from Adam's Point in Durham on April 11th.

A NORTHERN PINTAIL, 2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and 4 FISH CROWS were seen at Great Meadows on Route 11B in Gilford on April 12th.

NORTHERN SHRIKE sightings during the past week included 1 in Keene and 1 in Hancock.

A PINE GROSBEAK was reported from Mont Vernon on April 12th.

BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included 24 in Newfields on April 13th, and 25 in Chichester on April 12th.

COMMON REDPOLL sightings during the past week included a large flock in Ashland, and single birds in Chatham, Merrimack, and Enfield Center.

There were several reports of EVENING GROSBEAKS during the past week, including 5 in Barnstead, 5 in Keene, 15 in Croydon, 2 in Gilsum, and a flock in Hancock.

52 TURKEY VULTURES were seen roosting in Keene along the eastern edge of Green Wagon Farm, next to the Ashuelot River, on April 11th.

A BLUE-HEAD VIREO was reported from Keene on April 14th.

A LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was reported from Meredith, and one was reported from Amherst, both on April 12th.

NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS were reported from Hinsdale and Exeter on April 13th, and Epsom on April 12th.

An AMERICAN BITTERN was reported from Hancock on April 15th.

Other early spring arrivals reported during the past week included BARN and TREE SWALLOWS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, PINE, PALM, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, SAVANNAH, SWAMP, and FIELD SPARROWS.

There are still good numbers of WILSON'S SNIPE being reported from wet farm fields, and a few AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS continue to be seen. PURPLE FINCHES seem to be on the move, as there were several reports of new arrivals at feeders.

Week of 4/10/08

This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, April 10th, 2008.

A ROSS'S GOOSE was discovered at Moore Fields along Route 155A in Durham on March 29th and was seen there for several days afterwards. It was last reported on April 5th. 1 or 2 SNOW GEESE have been reported from Moore Fields since then.

4 SANDHILL CRANES were seen in Warner on April 9th but have not been relocated. The SANDHILL CRANE that has been spending summers in Monroe for more than 5-years running has returned. Traditionally, it has been seen in fields near Plains Road, and along the Connecticut River.

A EURASIAN WIGEON, 1 NORTHERN SHOVELER, and 35 AMERICAN WIGEON were seen in the southeast corner of Great Bay on April 6th.

3 CACKLING GEESE and 2 SNOW GEESE were seen along with approximately 1,500 CANADA GEESE in Great Meadows in Charlestown on April 6th.

13 SNOW GEESE were seen in Hampton Marsh on April 5th, and a flock of 16 BRANT were seen along the coast on April 6th.

2 GADWALL were reported on Great Bay from the Greenland area on April 5th.

4 NORTHERN SHOVELERS were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on April 5th, and 4 were seen on Great Bay on the 4th.

15 NORTHERN PINTAIL were seen in farm fields on Kingston on April 5th, 2 were seen on fields on West Portsmouth Street in Concord on the 5th, 2 were seen in the fields on Krif Road in Keene on the 5th, and 2 were seen along the Winnesquam River in Tilton on the 6th.

4 LESSER SCAUP, a HORNED GREBE, 6 GADWALL, 7 NORTHERN PINTAIL, a BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 45 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 45 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 94 COMMON MERGANSERS, 154 WOOD DUCKS, 6 BUFFLEHEADS and numerous other water birds were reported from along the Connecticut River and in nearby fields between Charlestown and Hinsdale on April 4th.

A RUDDY DUCK was seen on Lake Winnesquam on April 6th. 2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were seen on Powdermill Pond in Hancock on April 6th. 53 COMMON GOLDENEYE were seen on the Androscoggin River in Errol on April 3rd. A group of 40 WOOD DUCKS was seen on the Merrimack River in Concord on April 5th. About 500 GREATER SCAUP were reported from Great Bay on April 4th.

A GLOSSY IBIS was reported from Manchester last weekend. A GREAT EGRET was reported from North Hampton on April 5th, and 4 were seen in Seabrook on the 8th. A SNOWY EGRET was seen in Hampton Falls on the 8th.

2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen on River Road in Walpole on April 5th. An AMERICAN PIPIT, 4 SNOW BUNTINGS, and 25 HORNED LARKS were seen at the Laconia Airport on April 6th. 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, 220 HORNED LARKS, and a SAVANNAH SPARROW were seen in Moore Fields on Route 155A in Durham on April 5th.

16 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen at Krif Road in Keene on April 7th, 3 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were reported from Bartlett Road in East Kingston on April 5th

A LESSER YELLOWLEGS was reported from the Krif Road fields in Keen on April 6th, a pair of PIPING PLOVERS was seen at Hampton Beach State Park on April 3rd, and 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen in Hampton Marsh on April 5th.

37 WILSON'S SNIPE were seen at Runnymede Farm in Hampton, 31 were seen at Great Bay Farm in Greenland, 21 were seen at the Krif Road fields in Keene, and 5 were seen in Moore Fields in Durham, all on April 5th.

60 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were reported from Rye Harbor State Park on April 6th.

A BONAPARTE'S GULL was seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on April 7th.

NORTHERN SHRIKE sightings during the past week included 1 in Keene on April 9th, 1 in Lee on the 6th, and 1 in Errol on the 3rd.

2 PINE GROSBEAKS were seen in Penacook on April 6th.

BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included 10 in Exeter on April 9th, 20 in Keene on the 9th, 70 in Nashua on the 6th, 89 in Belmont on the 6th, 35 in Greenland on the 6th, 40 in Raymond on the 6th, 20 in Enfield on the 6th, 50 in Hanover on the 6th, 16 in Hampton on the 5th, 70 in Portsmouth on the 4th, 20 in Stratham on the 3rd, and 30 in Littleton on the 3rd.

COMMON REDPOLL sightings during the past week included 10 in Ashland on April 6th, 1 in Penacook on the 6th, and several in Enfield Center on the 3rd.

A flock of 10 EVENING GROSBEAKS was reported from Hancock on April 9th.

A PINE WARBLER was reported from Exeter, and one was reported from East Kingston, both on April 9th.

Early-returning migrants reported during the past week included: BLUE-WINGED TEAL, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and PALM WARBLER.

Other early-returning migrants during the past week included: PIED-BILLED GREBE, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, NORTHERN FLICKER, BELTED KINGFISHER, EASTERN PHOEBE, TREE SWALLOW, OSPREY, AMERICAN KESTREL, NORTHERN HARRIER, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, KILLDEER, WINTER WREN, CHIPPING SPARROW, and FOX SPARROW.

Week of 4/3/08

This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, April 3rd, 2008.

A ROSS'S GOOSE was discovered at Moore Field along Route 155A in Durham on March 29th and was seen there for several days afterwards. It was last reported on April 1st. A breeding-plumaged BLACK-HEADED GULL was also seen in Moore Fields on April 1st.

2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen at the Hinsdale Setbacks on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on March 25th.

4 CACKLING GEESE were seen at the Hinsdale Setbacks on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on March 30th.

Good numbers of SNOW GEESE have been reported during the past week, including 46 in Great Meadows in Charlestown on April 1st, 240 along the Connecticut River in North Haverhill on March 30th, 57 in East Conway on the 29th, and 25 in Lebanon on the 27th.

BLACK VULTURE sightings during the past week included 1 in Walpole on March 30th, 1 in Durham on the 29th, and 1 in Tamworth on the 26th.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen at Great Meadows in Charlestown on April 2nd, and one was seen on Clark Pond Road in Haverhill on March 26th.

A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at the Town Landing in Durham on March 30th, and 2 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on April 1st.

A CANVASBACK, a LESSER SCAUP, 350 RING-NECKED DUCKS, and many other ducks were seen at Powwow Pond in Kingston on March 29th.

5 GADWALL and 2 LESSER SCAUP were reported from Ledyard Bridge in Hanover on April 2nd.

4 GADWALL were seen at Great Meadows in Charlestown on March 30th. A leucistic CANADA GOOSE was also present, as well as numerous other waterfowl.

3 NORTHERN SHOVELERS were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant, and 4 were seen at Great Meadows in Charlestown, all on April 2nd.

4 NORTHERN PINTAILS were seen at Great Meadows in Charlestown, and 2 were seen at Chapman's Landing in Stratham, all on March 30th.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on March 30th, and 4 PIED-BILLED GREBES were seen on the Merrimack River in Concord on the 31st.

NORTHERN SHRIKE sightings during the past week included 1 in Hinsdale on March 30th, 1 in North Haverhill on the 30th, 1 in Durham on the 28th, 1 in Holderness on the 28th, 1 in Jefferson on the 28th, and 1 in Monroe on the 26th.

PINE GROSBEAK sightings during the past week included 3 in Epsom on March 30th, and 9 in Errol on the 27th.

BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included 100 in Exeter on April 1st, 75 in Chichester on March 31st, 9 in Barrington on the 31st, 60 in Lebanon on the 31st, 100 in Concord on the 30th, 15 in Walpole on the 30th, 63 in Durham on the 30th, 3 in Newington on the 29th, a flock in Holderness on the 28th, 60 in Hanover on the 28th, and 75 in Nashua on the 26th.

COMMON REDPOLL sightings during the past week included 180 in Jefferson on April 1st, 6 in Fitzwilliam on March 31st, 8 in Penacook on the 30th, 5 in Mont Vernon on the 29th, 11 in Etna on the 28th, and 50 in Enfield Center on the 28th.

A flock of 42 EVENING GROSBEAKS was reported from Jefferson on April 1st.

120 HORNED LARKS and 30 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at Moore Fields on Route 155A in Durham on March 31st, and 2 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen on Krif Road in Keene on March 29th.

A pair of RUSTY BLACKBIRDS was reported from along the Connecticut River, south of Hanover, on March 29th.

2 MERLINS were seen in Keene on March 27th.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen in Concord on March 31st.

A TREE SWALLOW was reported was from Boscawen on March 28th, and there have been a few more sightings from several locations since then.

Other early-returning migrants during the past week included sightings of FISH CROW, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, COMMON GRACKLE, OSPREY, AMERICAN KESTREL, PEREGRINE FALCON, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, NORTHERN HARRIER, TURKEY VULTURE, WILSON'S SNIPE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, KILLDEER, CHIPPING SPARROW, and FOX SPARROW.
