The recent discovery, by several Audubon Society of New Hampshire volunteers, of a new nesting pair of Bald Eagles along the Merrimack River in Bedford, New Hampshire, has catapulted our organization into a controversy that goes far beyond the eagles themselves. Audubon has adopted a very strong and principled position on protection of these eagles and their nesting habitat and on the potential impacts that could result from construction of a proposed new bridge over the Merrimack River less than 400 feet away from the nest site. Richard Moore's article, Save the Eagles; Save the Land explains this position.

JoAnn O'Shaughnessy, an Audubon volunteer who was instrumental in the discovery of the new nest in on the Merrimack River, has taken a number of photographs of this pair and their nest. Several of these pictures are featured on these pages, and more will be included soon. Our thanks to her for allowing ASNH to use her pictures on our web site.

What is it like to actually be in a Bald Eagle's nest? See for yourself by visiting the nest of a pair of eagles near Turner's Falls, Massachusetts at www.nu.com/eagles/.

For much more information about the biology and conservation of Bald Eagles, as well as many other species of birds of prey, visit the University of Minnesota Raptor Center at http://www.raptor.cvm.umn.edu/.

Many bald eagles that nest further north in eastern Canada migrate into New England for the cold winter months. Many stay the winter in New Hampshire, but even more pass through the state on their migrations south in the fall and back north in the spring.
