On July 8, 1999, two osprey chicks were banded at Lake Massabesic in New Hampshire. This is the first time that ospreys have been banded in New Hampshire. The nest was built in December of 1997 to attract ospreys, with spectacular results.

Dan Geiger, who had built the nest in 1997, again offered his services and climbed to the nest. As the adults circled overhead, the chicks were retrieved and lowered to the ground, one at a time, for banding. During the banding process, each chick was banded, weighed, and a blood sample was taken to measure mercury levels.
