NH Audubon, a nonprofit statewide membership organization, is dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and habitat throughout the state. Independent of the National Audubon Society, NH Audubon has offered programs in wildlife conservation, land protection, environmental policy, and environmental education since 1914. Open Positions at NH Audubon

Administrative Assistant

LOCATION: McLane Center, Concord, NH

COMPENSATION: $18-$20 an hour, commensurate with experience. This position also includes an NH Audubon Annual Membership ($60 value) and access to Pro Deals.

HOURS: Core schedule to be determined within the regular business hours of 9:00am to 5:00pm. Days vary according to schedule.

SCHEDULE: 20 hours per week, part-time, non-exempt (hourly paid) staff position.  Schedule may vary according to needs.

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by providing general administrative support to the President and additional staff within the organization.

LEADERSHIP: Reports to the Director of Human Resources

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

Providing efficient and effective administrative support to president:

  • Manage President’s Outlook calendar and email and scheduled meetings.
  • Monitor availability of President and coordinate communications with staff, when needed.
  • Assist President with online biweekly timekeeping tasks.
  • Maintain current information in organization documents and records; distribute documents to appropriate staff, members, partners, and other recipients.
  • Develop and maintain organized filing system for the President’s office and important organization files.
  • Maintain an organized, efficient and welcoming work environment (both personal workspace and President’s).
  • Complete general office tasks including, but not limited to running errands, filing, photocopying, and scanning documents.
  • Develop templates and protocol for submitting correspondence and testimony to President for review and signature.
  • Establish and maintain digital and hard copy records of all correspondence and legislative testimony.

Serving as liaison between President and Board of Trustees:

  • Maintain central repository for Board and Committee meeting minutes.
  • Research and implement portal for Board of Trustees.
  • Launch and assist with initial user training on portal.
  • Attend Board of Trustee meetings and record meeting minutes when requested.
  • Manage board meeting logistics such as scheduling, room reservations, and refreshments.
  • Serve as main point of contact and assist President with administrative requests from the Board of Trustees.
  • Maintain files on Board of Trustees members and potential members.
  • Assist with orientation and onboarding of Board of Trustee members.

Providing administrative support to staff within organization:

  • Record meeting minutes at monthly all-staff meeting (and other meetings, as requested) and implement systems to store and share minutes, as appropriate.
  • Support Membership & Development Department with mailings and special event coordination.
  • Purchase and prepare refreshments for meetings, including monthly all staff meetings.
  • Plan and coordinate birthday, holiday and other special staff events or celebrations at McLane Center or other venues.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Camp Educator

SUMMARY: Do you have a passion for wildlife and the outdoors? We provide a positive, fun working environment with plenty of opportunities to develop new leadership and teaching skills. Our Camp Educator position will provide you with the tools and training to lead nature camp programming, provide effective child management, and teach in an outdoor setting. NH Audubon believes in an inquiry-based, student led approach to our teaching methods which is aimed at promoting curiosity of the natural world.

The Camp Educator position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by creating and sustaining a respectful, fun, and safe camp culture by facilitating positive youth development activities and games, assisting with camp coordination of daily nature-based activities, and supervising campers during extended care programs.

TITLE: Camp Educator

LOCATION: McLane Center (Concord, NH) or Massabesic Center (Auburn, NH)

HOURS: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm, 1-hour unpaid lunch, seasonal full-time, non-exempt (hourly paid). Hours may vary depending on camp needs.

SCHEDULE: Camp Training (2 weeks): June 10th – 21st

Day Camp (9 weeks): June 24th – August 23rd

Wrap-up and debrief (1 week): August 26th – 30th

Days off: weekends, Juneteenth (6/19), Independence Day Weekend (7/4 & 7/5)

FUNCTION: This position will entail coordinating daily games and activities for campers in environmental education topics, facilitating daily nature-based activities, and supervision of campers, ranging in age from 4-15, during entirety of the camp day.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attends all training sessions prior to the camp season.
  • Oversees and maintains responsibility for camper safety, well-being, and fun.
  • Develops and implements daily environmental activities for 4-5 and/or 6-12 year-old campers.
  • Prepares lesson plans and/or thematic outdoor activities to share during camp training. Uses provided lesson plans to teach environmental topics.
  • Provides first aid to campers as needed.
  • Communicates effectively and respectfully to campers and parents.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively to other staff about camper behavior, safety, and other camp activity feedback.
  • Maintains program supplies in good condition. Performs facility and supply cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Will participate in camp evaluation and cleanup at the end of the session.
  • Ensures compliance with NH’s COVID safety guidelines for summer camps.
  • Creates and sustains a respectful camp culture with a zero tolerance for bullying.

LEADERSHIP: Reports to the Camp Director

WORKING CONDITIONS: Outdoor camp setting; excellent non-smoking environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Basic understanding of biology, wildlife, and life sciences required (some college courses preferred). Training regarding effective outdoor education teaching methods and site-specific opportunities for ecological learning will be provided.

Experience: Eagerness and excitement to share basic facts about biology/ecology in fun, interactive ways is required. Ability to make both independent and collaborative decisions required. Must have American Red Cross or American Heart Association Standard First Aid certification and CPR certification or equivalent desirable. Experience teaching or providing care to children, preferably in a camp setting, and demonstrated ability to implement and lead creative activities preferred.

Skills, Traits and Characteristics Necessary for Success: Requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.  Creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm, with a sincere interest in the natural environment or education is necessary. Applicants older than 18 must be able to pass a criminal background check. Applicants younger than 18 require two letters of recommendation from non-relative individuals, which the hiring committee will ask for if selected after interviewing. Must be vaccinated against COVID-19 and can provide COVID vaccination card at orientation.

Physical Demands: To perform the essential functions of the position, the following applies: excellent physical condition with capability to moderately hike, run and climb, tolerance for variable weather conditions, ability to work in an outdoor setting and able to lift up to 25 lbs.  Camp uniform required (will be provided).

Director of Lands and Ecological Management

LOCATION: Office at McLane Center – 84 Silk Farm Road, Concord, NH 03301; responsibilities statewide at NH Audubon Wildlife Sanctuaries. See more at www.nhaudubon.org/lands

SCHEDULE: 35 hours per week, full-time exempt (salary paid) staff position. Schedule may vary according to needs and may include some evenings and weekends.

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon, to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by managing ecosystems and habitats within the legal interests for all of NH Audubon’s statewide system of land and property holdings including fee-owned Wildlife Sanctuaries, conservation easements, and cooperative management agreements. This position supervises seasonal sanctuary staff and year-round volunteers.

ESSENTIAL WORK FUNCTIONS:

  • Direct and manage all aspects of NH Audubon’s statewide system of land and property holdings.
  • Develop and implement a long-term vision and strategic plan for NH Audubon’s lands.
  • Develop and implement annual work plans and budgets for Wildlife Sanctuary maintenance and habitat management.
  • Manage and mitigate risks appropriately; train others to make safe decisions.
  • Ensure annual monitoring and enforcement of conservation easements via staff, volunteers, and/or contractors.
  • Implement Best Management Practices (BMPs) to support wildlife habitats, biological diversity, and maintain ecological integrity at NH Audubon properties.
  • Lead internal, external, and partner communications regarding implementation of BMPs and the results of those actions on Wildlife Sanctuaries, trail closures, volunteer trainings/workdays, and any land protection projects.
  • Manage and oversee NH Audubon properties with public access accommodations including, but not limited to, the creation and maintenance of hiking trails, and information resources such as interpretive signs, trailhead kiosks, and visitor guides/brochures, to the highest possible standard.
  • Manage and maintain Wildlife Sanctuary boundaries with staff and/or contractors.
  • Manage communications with tax collectors in towns and submit annual state required A-9 and an A-12 forms to each town by the 15th of April every year.
  • Hire, direct, manage, train, and motivate seasonal staff and volunteers, for infrastructure improvement, habitat management, land monitoring, and/or education functions at Wildlife Sanctuaries.
  • Represent NH Audubon at local meetings that affect Wildlife Sanctuary property such as planning board and conservation commission meetings as needed.
  • Provide timely responses and resolutions to land use conflicts on fee-owned properties and conservation easements.
  • Serve as staff liaison on the NH Audubon Sanctuaries & Land Management Committee of the Board; reporting updates to NH Audubon staff and board.
  • Promote educational and recreational use of NH Audubon properties with Communications and Education teams.
  • Maintain inventory of hand and power tools in the Lands Tool Cache prioritizing safety and effectiveness.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources Management or related field required; master’s degree preferred.

Experience: 

  • Five to seven years’ experience in land management with a property base greater than five thousand acres, preferably in a non-profit setting required. 
  • Must have knowledge of and experience with wildlife habitat inventory, management, and enhancement techniques and an understanding of forestry practices.
  • Must have demonstrated organizational and budgetary oversight skills.
  • Must have map, compass, and GPS expertise with the ability to read deed descriptions and locate ground boundaries.

Education Assistant

HOURS: 25 hours per week, part-time, non-exempt (hourly paid) staff position. Weekend availability needed. Hours may vary according to needs.

SCHEDULE: Schedule will vary according to needs and seasons and includes weekends and occasional evenings. Weekend hours are a focus and need for this position as NH Audubon continues to expand hours of public operation. Additional hours may be required as necessary.   

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by implementing educational programs for school groups, preschool children, adults, teachers and families.  This position assists with care and management of captive animals including feeding, cleaning, and training. This position will lead education-based birthday parties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assisting with the coordination and implementation of educational programs at various locations throughout the state.
  • Assisting with the development and evaluation of programs and exhibits.
  • Assisting with the growth and implementation of marketing efforts in support of educational programming.
  • Maintaining program statistics database for center programs.
  • Performing outreach to local schools and institutions to increase programming.
  • Leading education-based birthday parties on the weekends.
  • Preparing, learning and reviewing educational programs for presentation at birthday party.

Events Coordinator

LOCATION: McLane Center – Concord, NH and Massabesic Center – Auburn, NH.

COMPENSATION: $12-$14 an hour, commensurate with experience.

HOURS: Saturday, Sunday and/or weekday evenings – as needed. Average of 16hr/week. Part-time non-exempt (hourly paid) support staff position.

SCHEDULE: Schedule will vary according to needs. April – November 2024, with the opportunity to continue past November. Additional hours may be required as necessary.

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by serving as the on-site coordinator for facility rentals and events managed by the Events Manager at both of NH Audubon’s locations: McLane Center in Concord and Massabesic Center in Auburn.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare facility for event or function according to contract details including, but not limited to, setting up tables and chairs, ensuring cleanliness, opening and closing building, lighting, etc.
  • Assist clients and vendors during events and respond to requests with a consistently positive and accommodating attitude, focusing on customer service.
  • Ensure that vendors and event guests comply with NH Audubon policies and guidelines.
  • Serve as the point person for on-site questions, needs, or emergencies.
  • Conduct all post-event procedures including, but not limited to, kitchen cleanliness, restroom cleanliness, emptying trash, vacuuming floor and facility set up/tear down.
  • Secure building according to center closing procedures.

Massabesic Center Nature Store Associate

LOCATION: Massabesic Center, Auburn, NH

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by overseeing all aspects of the store operations, providing a quality service for members and the general public, and generating a profit center for the organization.  Responsibilities include budgeting, inventory, purchasing, and marketing.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Oversee the Massabesic Center Nature Store and front desk in order to provide a quality service for members and the general public and generate a mission-driven brand merchandising center for the organization by:

  • Working closely with the Nature Store Manager at the McLane Center to monitor annual budget including sales, purchases and expenses. 
  • Working closely with the Nature Store Manager at the McLane Center to maintain a vision and focus for the store consistent with our mission and strengths in collaboration with management. 
  • Working closely with the Nature Store Manager at the McLane Center to research current retail market trends appropriate to a nature store environment and developing contacts for purchasing mission-related inventory. 
  • Assessing and evaluating existing inventory and remarketing items to sell. 
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of current products, especially as related to birds, bird watching and bird feeding. 
  • Maintaining a reputation for the store as a source of expertise on mission-related product. 
  • Developing and creating displays for inventory and rotating stock to create visually pleasing merchandise presentations. 
  • Processing special orders, online orders and mail orders. 
  • Responding to customer inquiries via phone, email and in person. 
  • Promoting membership and programs whenever possible. 
  • Greeting, assisting and directing visitors to other NH Audubon programs areas. 
  • Fielding questions from the public and from private event rentals. 
  • Managing the Center’s calendar for volunteer events, educational programs, and meetings
